Regen farming event offers a clear vision for future land use

Meet The Farmers has released its exclusive LandAlive podcast, reflecting on the opportunities and challenges of the transition to regenerative land use.

At the end of November, LandAlive, a new regenerative food and farming event, took place at the Bath and West Showground in Somerset. Organised by Sustainable Food Somerset, in association with the Bath and West Society, LandAlive brought together farmers and other industry speakers to offer a vision for how the whole food supply chain can become more resilient, profitable and environmentally sustainable.

The event’s speakers ranged from farmers, consultants, scientists and environmentalists to food processors and human health experts together with dozens of trade stands filling the main hall.

Event media partner RuralPod Media, which produces the Meet the Farmers podcast, has now released an episode based on the event, supported by South West farming insurance experts Cornish Mutual.

This Meet The Farmers episode includes interviews with speakers and recordings of panel sessions, and tackles topics from local food to soil health and storytelling.

RuralPod Media’s Head of Podcasts, Ben Eagle said, “LandAlive had an incredibly positive and forward thinking atmosphere and it was a joy to speak to people at the event about their experiences and visions for the future.”

Roots to Regeneration prize
The Bath and West Agricultural Innovation Prize Fund was also launched at LandAlive.

This prize will support personal development and farm-based action learning through the Roots to Regeneration programme for farmers seeking to evolve their farm business model towards regenerative farming systems, unlock innovative farming approaches and enterprise design, and facilitate new collaborations.

Sponsored by the Worshipful Company of Grocers through The Royal Bath & West of England Society, £2,500 is available to two members of the farming community in the South West of England (totalling £5,000 of prize money). The prize is offered as a bursary to subsidise their participation in and learning from the pioneering Roots to Regeneration agriculture training programme, led by Clare Hill and Caroline Grindrod. Submissions from farmers, vets, agronomists or other agricultural advisors who have a direct influence on farm business models and innovation in farming are welcomed.

Sustainable Food Somerset Board Member, Tamara Giltsoff said, “The LandAlive event brought together a diverse group of people who are pioneering regenerative approaches to farming, food production and distribution, human health and wellbeing, and valuing and investing in nature. The event attracted over 70 pioneering speakers and 700 attendees who are farmers, fibre growers, medics, nutritionists, soil scientists, policy makers, investors and nature markets leaders. We are starting to see LandAlive as a platform and ‘movement’ for regeneration across our economies and society as well as on the land.”

Cornish Mutual’s Head of Brand and Sustainability, Juliet Allister said, “As producer of our podcast Farming Focus, we were thrilled to support Ben in making this Meet the Farmers episode about LandAlive. The event reflects all we do to support our Members build sustainable, resilient businesses by taking care of the land for future generations right here in the South West.”
