Learn the basics of orchard design

Andy Howard from the Heritage Fruit Tree Co will be running a hands-on event at FarmED on the 8th June. At the event you’ll be able to learn the basics of designing an orchard.

Attendees will gain the knowledge, theory, skills and insight necessary to plan and plant an orchard, whether as an individual or as a start up community orchard group.

During the day you will learn about how and why we have to plan an orchard, and how to distinguish between different soil types and orchard locations. Attendees will also learn about different top fruit, planting conditions, and choosing the best root stocks.

By the end of the day you will understand the advantages and disadvantages of different sites, planting distances and planting patterns. You’ll also learn about the benefit to wildlife and biodiversity that an orchard can bring.

You will be able to try out planning and laying out an orchard on paper, and visit FarmED’s own Heritage Orchard.

Prices are tiered and the course will include lunch.
