Unbreaking imprint call for authors

The publishing imprint, Unbreaking, is looking for change-making authors from the worlds of economics, political science, sociology, farming and forestry – people working and campaigning for change.

The publisher said, “For far too long, we’ve separated ourselves from nature putting our humanness on a pedestal above all else. Through this mindset we’re not only wreaking havoc on the environment, but we’re also destroying ourselves. The divide between the haves and the have nots has grown and the democratic system seems to be crumbling around our ears.

“Scientists have long been sounding the alarm to warn us about the damage we’re inflicting on the planet, but we’re still way off net zero targets. Governments and businesses are key to driving change, and green investment and collaboration will help shift the dial but transparency in governance and policy is vital in building trust, and our current economic system needs an overhaul.”

Unbreaking – a new imprint
The publisher says that, “Unbreaking is a multi-disciplinary space – it provides a publishing platform for books based on, but not limited to, new theories, results of trials, impassioned argument, polemics and the seemingly unconventional. It welcomes books that speak to academics and policy makers, to those fighting for change, and, crucially, to those who are as yet unaware or unaccepting of the need for change.”

“Earlier this year Unbreaking published Six Inches of Soil: How to Heal Ourselves and Our Communities Through Regenerative Farming, based on the film, which launched in January 2024.

“Working on this project we quickly realised that the changes in agricultural practice were reliant on transformations in many other aspects of our systems.”

Unbreaking says it wants to address urgent questions:

  • How can farmers produce a wider variety of crops when the supermarket system offers no marketplace for them to sell those crops?
  • How do new people with new ideas and from diverse backgrounds come into the agricultural space to drive change when access to land is so restricted?
  • How can people make healthier food choices when the food system prices unhealthy options much lower than healthy options, and promotes junk over nutrition?
  • How can those on lower incomes access better food, healthcare and education when inequality widens?
  • How do we rebuild the social capital we’ve lost when all our time goes to earning money to buy (mostly) things we do not need?
  • How can businesses change for the better when corporate governance structures prioritise growth, profit and shareholder returns, and employees have so little say?
  • How do we stop harming the planet and each other when growth (GDP) is the measure that controls all?

“And that’s just for starters,” they say. “So much is broken. We need to do a much better job of unbreaking.”

Initially, Unbreaking is looking for titles in the areas of:

  • Agri-food system
  • Agroecological and regenerative farming
  • Alternative and local currencies
  • Cooperative and worker-led business structures
  • Degrowth
  • Ecological and alternative economics/funding
  • Land access
  • Social enterprises
  • Universal basic incomes/services
