SAI Platform unveils the next iteration of Regenerating Together Programme

SAI Platform has announced the latest iteration of the Regenerating Together Programme global framework for regenerative agriculture.

Building on its initial launch in September 2023, this updated narrative incorporates practical input from SAI Platform members, farmers, and the Regenerating Together External Advisory Board.

Supporting documents, including an Implementation Guide, Assurance Protocol, and Quantification Guide, will follow in January 2025 to help guide the agri-food industry toward a unified set of principles for on-the-ground action and continuous improvement.

SAI Platform’s Regenerating Together Programme global framework for regenerative agriculture is a flexible, science-based toolset designed to help farms achieve context-specific outcomes, whether individually or as part of implementation groups. This iteration integrates input from ongoing consultations and field tests, ensuring it remains farmer-centric and adaptable to diverse farming systems.

Key features of the updated framework:

  • Four-Step Process: guides users through a context analysis, outcome selection, practice adoption and progress monitoring.
  • Focus on Impact Areas: emphasises soil health, water, biodiversity, climate, and farmer livelihoods.
  • Revised performance levels: rewards farmers for ongoing engagement with regenerative practices and incentivises those new to the approach.
  • Implementation Groups: promotes collective action, peer learning and collaboration essential for scaling regenerative agriculture across landscapes and markets.

Iver Drabaek, Head of Sustainability at Nordzucker, said, “SAI Platform’s members have played a crucial role in providing valuable feedback that has shaped the evolution of the framework. In the coming months, we will deliver additional resources to support users in implementing the framework and making claims. The intention is to enable businesses to initiate and scale regenerative agriculture across their supply chains in a practical and tangible way.”

The development of the Regenerating Together global framework for regenerative agriculture took a collaborative and inclusive approach to align members and ultimately the wider agri-food industry.

Speaking to the ongoing facilitation to refine the framework and the benefits this brings to strengthening the programme, Guus van Laarhoven, Senior Manager Regenerative Farming at Friesland Campina explained, “This new version of the framework offers much more flexibility as it accommodates the different contexts of agricultural sectors and geographical diversity.”

The Regenerating Together External Advisory Board has been instrumental in ensuring the framework is scientifically grounded and farmer-centric.

Commenting on the development of the framework and the consultation process, Antoine Brasset, Advisory Board member representing the Earthworm Foundation, said, “This version is an encouraging next step to recognising the pressing need to harmonise and align approaches in regenerative agriculture. We salute SAI Platform’s efforts to continuously improve the Regenerating Together Programme framework in consultation with stakeholders and taking stock of real-life implementation and feedback from the field.”

Dominik Klauser, Director of Regenerative Agriculture at SAI Platform, added, “SAI Platform remains committed to working collaboratively to refine the framework and advance the global transition towards regenerative agriculture. As we endeavour to build momentum, stakeholders are invited to participate in upcoming pilot programmes to further improve the framework and support regenerative agricultural systems.”
